Missing: A Life with Books

A Life with Books by Julian Barnes

Have you seen this book? My copy of Julian Barnes’s ‘A Life with Books’ has run away from home.

One of my books has taken off. I’m not sure how he got away. I suspect my other books colluded, but they’re not saying anything.

If you see him, you can report it on http://www.BookCrossing.com/ .

I got up today and there was a note from A Life with Books, along with a photo to remember him by.

Here’s what he wrote:

Dear J.D.,

By the time you read this, I’ll be gone.

It’s not you; it’s me.

Actually, it is you. A love like yours is too possessive. I can’t commit to just one reader; I need to see other readers. I felt claustrophobic on your bookshelves, crammed in with all your other books. I hope you’ll understand.

I felt neglected, any way, when you took up with Sweet Tooth. Curse you, Ian McEwan!

I want to see the world, I want to be read and talked about.

Don’t worry about me. I’ll get people to take photos of me on my travels, so you’ll know I’m OK. You can see where I am at BookCrossing.com. My BookCrossing ID is 105-11370784.

PS Do the other books a favour: dust the bookshelves more often.
