Wilde’s year

Photo of Oscar Wilde's eyes against a night sky and stars

16 October: Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde was born on this day in 1854.

Don a green carnation, take up a yellow book, take a walk on the Wilde side through London, visit Wilde’s grave in Paris, or better still, read Wildely.

2016 has been Oscar Wilde’s year. Paris is hosting a major Wilde exhibition, Rupert Everett is making a film about Wilde’s final years, Athena Media has recorded Wilde’s stories, and Reading Prison is hosting artists, writers and actors as they respond to Wilde’s imprisonment and work.

See videos of the Paris exhibition and Neil Bartlett’s performance of De Profundis.

I’ll leave you with some quotations from Lady Windermere’s Fan, De Profundis and a conversation Wilde had with André Gide (see below).
